Annual School Supply Drive

It’s July, and Delaware County students are enjoying a long break from school … probably not contemplating their eventual return to the classroom.  However, very soon, advertisements for school supply sales will be everywhere!  My personal favorite is the TV commercial from Staples showing a happy parent tossing school supplies in his cart while the Christmas tune “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” plays in the background.

It IS a wonderful time of the year for NUUC members and friends, as we have another opportunity to help others … this month by participating in the Social Action Committee’s annual school supply drive to benefit students who are served by the Delaware County Juvenile Probation Program.  As a school psychologist, I see firsthand that students who have the supplies necessary for learning get off to a better start to the school year.  Donation of school supplies is one way for the congregation to express our belief in the importance of education to a group of students who are at higher than average risk for failing and dropping out of school.

Your donations of school supplies or money to purchase supplies will be much appreciated.  The student population served generally ranges in age from 13 – 19 … Dora the Explorer backpacks are not a big hit with this crowd!  However, supplies such as age-appropriate backpacks, pens, pencils, spiral notebooks, scientific calculators, index cards, highlighters, binders and filler paper (etc.) are much needed…. The MOST REQUESTED item is a special notebook called a Trapper Keeper.  A collection bin will be placed on the coat rack at NUUC near the greeter’s area entrance from July 18 to August 15.  If you choose to donate money, please write your check to NUUC and put “School Supplies” on the memo line; then, just put it in the offering basket or mail it to NUUC at P. O. Box 541, Lewis Center, OH 43035.  Questions?  Please contact Diane Mattox at 614-204-4184 or dimattox@gmail.com .   Thank you!

P.S.  Come to NUUC on Sunday, July 25th to learn more about how our efforts make a difference, when Darlene Miller, Supervisor for the Delaware Juvenile Probation Program, attends our worship service and shares briefly about her program!

Refreshment Help Requested

One NUUC tradition that carries on week to week is coffee, cookies, and conversation after services.  In an effort to share in the set up and clean up of this after-service treat, a monthly sign-up schedule has been designed.  A very special thank you to all of you who have taken a turn at this task…

If you have not already done so, could you spare a bit of time some Sunday to help?  Please?  The process is easy--all you have to do is follow instructions that are already posted in the kitchen on where everything is and how to make coffee (if you don't know how). And then clean up after and put things back.  Everything is provided for you.  (But, of course, if you want to try a new cookie recipe or have dessert left from a meeting or family function, you are more than welcome to share it!)

This is the perfect opportunity to work as a couple, or grab a friend to help.  If everyone took a turn, no one would have to do it every week.  And it's fun!   We are currently scheduling through August—see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for available dates, or please contact Teri Cornell at tericornell@ymail.com or 614-891-5935.

Loose Change Project Update

Your Social Action Committee will continue its “Loose Change” project in 2010 by collecting your loose coins during the worship service on Sunday, July 11, as it has on the second Sunday of each month throughout the past year.

The NUUC Youth chose Heifer International to receive the May/June collections, an agency which seeks to bring assistance and sustaining opportunities to suffering people in poverty- and disaster-plagued countries. The Youth made a special presentation to the congregation in June regarding their chosen charity.  A total of $174.28 was collected for Heifer Int’l.  For more information on that effort, go to http://www.heifer.org/

The Social Action Committee has selected NUUC’s Annual School Supply Drive benefiting the children served by the Delaware Co. Juvenile Probation Program as its recipient for the July and August collections (see article elsewhere in this newsletter).

Additional deserving recipients for 2010 Loose Change collections are always under discussion.  For questions regarding the “Loose Change” project or to suggest a recipient, contact Chair Tracy Steinbrenner at tracystein@att.net or any member of your Social Action Committee.

Share Your Excess Linens

Pease remember this project the next time you clean out your linen closet…

If you have used (but stain-free) towels and washcloths that you would like to get rid of, please consider donating them to "Share," the group that makes sleeping bags and health kits for the homeless in our area.  (Other items that are needed are fabric, blankets, men's ties and toiletries.)

Donation is easy—just give to Lynn Foreman at service any Sunday morning.  (If you can’t find her, you may leave the items on Jeri’s desk in the center office off Fellowship Hall with a note marked “for Share project.”)

For questions or more information about how you can help, please contact Lynn at 740-513-4876 or sbgmacb@hotmail.com or visit the Share project website at www.shareyourbest.us .
